What Is Knee Arthroscopy?
Knee arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical technique used to diagnose and treat a wide range of knee conditions. Instead of making large incisions, the surgeon creates small portals through which a thin instrument called an arthroscope is inserted. This tool contains a camera that transmits real-time images to a monitor, allowing for precise visualization and treatment of internal structures. This approach is especially effective for addressing soft tissue injuries, cartilage damage, and structural abnormalities in the knee. Procedures such as meniscus repair, ACL reconstruction, and removal of inflamed synovial tissue can all be performed arthroscopically. Because the technique minimizes trauma, it also typically results in faster recovery times and fewer complications than open surgery.
Benefits of Knee Arthroscopy
This advanced procedure offers a number of important advantages for patients seeking relief from knee pain and dysfunction:
- Minimally Invasive Access: Knee arthroscopy uses small incisions, which results in less tissue disruption and reduced post-operative pain.
- Faster Recovery: Most patients experience a shorter recovery time and quicker return to normal activities compared to traditional open surgery.
- Precise Diagnosis: The use of a high-definition arthroscope provides real-time visualization, enabling accurate assessment of internal joint structures.
- Targeted Treatment: The procedure allows for highly specific repairs, including addressing meniscus tears, ligament injuries, and cartilage damage.
- Lower Risk of Complications: Smaller incisions and less trauma reduce the risk of infection, blood loss, and scarring.
- Outpatient Procedure: Knee arthroscopy is typically performed in an outpatient setting, so you can go home the same day.

Meniscus Tear Treatment Options
Meniscus tear surgery is not always the first option; many tears can improve with conservative treatments. Here’s a look at the various treatment options we provide:
Non-Surgical Treatments
- Rest and Activity Modifications: Taking a break from activities that exacerbate symptoms.
- Physical Therapy: Customized exercises to strengthen the muscles around the knee and improve flexibility.
- Medication: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) to reduce pain and swelling.
- Corticosteroid Injections: Injected into the knee joint to alleviate inflammation.
These conservative methods can be effective, particularly for minor tears or patients who prefer to avoid surgery.
Meniscus Surgery
When conservative treatments fail or the tear is severe, meniscus surgery may be recommended.
There are three main types of surgical options:
-
-
Meniscus Repair: This involves stitching the torn pieces back together, allowing the meniscus to heal itself. The surgery is often done through knee arthroscopy, a minimally invasive procedure that minimizes recovery time and discomfort.
-
Partial Meniscectomy: In cases where the tear is too severe for repair, a partial meniscectomy involves removing the damaged portion of the meniscus while preserving healthy tissue.
-
Meniscus Transplant Surgery: For patients with severely damaged menisci, transplantation from a donor may be an option.
-

About Meniscectomy
A meniscectomy is a surgical procedure that removes all or part of a torn meniscus in the knee joint. The meniscus is a C-shaped cartilage that cushions the space between the thighbone (femur) and shinbone (tibia). When torn, it can cause pain, swelling, and instability in the knee. Dr. Rovner performs arthroscopic meniscectomies, which involve inserting a small camera and specialized instruments through tiny incisions to access and treat the tear. Depending on the severity and location of the damage, he may perform a partial or total meniscectomy. Partial meniscectomy removes only the damaged tissue, while total meniscectomy removes the entire meniscus.
ACL Repair
ACL repair is a surgical procedure that focuses on reattaching the torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) to the bone rather than removing and replacing it. This technique is typically used for patients who have experienced proximal ACL tears—tears close to where the ligament attaches to the femur. When identified early, these tears can often be treated successfully with preservation rather than reconstruction.
Unlike ACL reconstruction, which uses a graft to replace the ligament, ACL repair maintains the natural structure and integrity of your existing ACL. This means a shorter recovery timeline, lower risk of complications, and fewer long-term changes in joint mechanics.
ACL repair is usually performed using arthroscopic techniques, which require only small incisions and offer a faster, less painful recovery. It’s a viable option for select patients, especially younger individuals or athletes with isolated, repairable ACL injuries.
ACL Reconstruction
ACL reconstruction is a surgical procedure that repairs a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), one of the primary stabilizers of the knee.
The ACL connects the femur (thighbone) to the tibia (shinbone), and when torn, it can result in joint instability, pain, and an increased risk of future injuries.
Rather than stitching the torn ligament back together, reconstruction replaces the damaged ACL with a graft—typically using tissue from the patient’s own hamstring or patellar tendon, or from a donor. This restores the ligament’s function and allows patients to regain knee strength and stability. The procedure is typically performed arthroscopically using small incisions and a camera for precision and faster recovery. ACL reconstruction is especially common among athletes, but it can be essential for anyone with significant ACL damage that affects day-to-day movement.
Alternatives to Knee Arthroscopy
Before recommending surgery, Dr. Rovner may explore non-surgical treatments, including physical therapy, bracing, corticosteroid injections, and regenerative options. If knee arthroscopy is not appropriate for your condition, alternative surgical options or conservative management may be advised.
