Targeted Relief Through Meniscectomy A Knee Arthroscopy Solution

Meniscus tears are among the most common knee injuries, especially in athletes and active individuals. At Core Alliance, Dr. Aron Rovner offers expert meniscectomy procedures to relieve pain and restore mobility when non-surgical treatments are no longer effective. Using a minimally invasive arthroscopic approach, we provide targeted care with a focus on long-term joint health. What Is a Meniscectomy?

A meniscectomy is a surgical procedure that removes all or part of a torn meniscus in the knee joint. The meniscus is a C-shaped cartilage that cushions the space between the thighbone (femur) and shinbone (tibia). When torn, it can cause pain, swelling, and instability in the knee. Dr. Rovner performs arthroscopic meniscectomies, which involve inserting a small camera and specialized instruments through tiny incisions to access and treat the tear. Depending on the severity and location of the damage, he may perform a partial or total meniscectomy. Partial meniscectomy removes only the damaged tissue, while total meniscectomy removes the entire meniscus.

Benefits of Meniscectomy

Meniscectomy offers significant relief and recovery benefits for individuals with symptomatic meniscal tears:

  • Minimally Invasive Technique: The arthroscopic approach involves small incisions, leading to less trauma and faster healing.
  • Effective Pain Relief: Removing the torn portion of the meniscus often alleviates pain and discomfort caused by the injury.
  • Improved Knee Stability: By addressing the source of mechanical symptoms, patients typically experience better knee stability and mobility.
  • Faster Recovery Time: Most patients return to light activity within a few weeks and resume normal function between 4 and 6 months.
  • Outpatient Procedure: Meniscectomy is typically performed as an outpatient surgery, allowing patients to go home the same day.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Meniscectomy?

Meniscectomy is generally recommended for patients with meniscus tears that do not respond to conservative treatment like rest, physical therapy, or injections. Ideal candidates often include active individuals, athletes, or those with mechanical symptoms such as knee locking, clicking, or catching.

The decision to proceed with surgery depends on the location and type of tear, age, activity level, and overall knee health. Dr. Rovner performs a thorough evaluation to determine if a meniscectomy is the right choice for each patient.

Your Consultation

During your consultation at Core Alliance, Dr. Rovner will review your medical history, perform a physical exam, and order imaging tests such as an MRI to assess the tear. Your consultation can be in-person or virtual, depending on your needs. He will discuss your symptoms, lifestyle goals, and all available treatment options, ensuring you feel confident and informed about your care plan.

What to Expect During Meniscectomy

Meniscectomy is performed arthroscopically under local or general anesthesia. Once the anesthesia takes effect, Dr. Rovner makes two or three small incisions around the knee. A tiny camera (arthroscope) is inserted to view the joint and guide the procedure. Using specialized tools, he removes the torn portion of the meniscus and smooths the edges to prevent further damage.

The procedure typically takes less than an hour. After the surgery, the incisions are closed with sutures or surgical tape, and a sterile bandage is applied. Patients are usually monitored for a short time before being discharged with detailed post-operative instructions.

Recovery After Meniscectomy

Recovery varies depending on the extent of the tear and whether a partial or total meniscectomy was performed. Most patients can bear weight on the knee shortly after surgery and may resume light activity within 1 to 2 weeks.

Physical therapy is often recommended to rebuild strength and restore motion.

Full recovery typically occurs between 4 and 6 months, although high-impact sports or intense physical activity may require more time. Dr. Rovner and his team will guide you through every phase of recovery to ensure optimal healing.

Alternatives to Meniscectomy

For some patients, alternative treatments may be appropriate. These include physical therapy, anti-inflammatory medications, corticosteroid injections, or platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy. In cases of complex or degenerative tears, a meniscal repair or even joint replacement may be considered. Dr. Rovner explores all conservative options before recommending surgery.
